Environmental sustainability in road construction is becoming increasingly important as the public demands more sustainable practices and economic considerations make sustainable solutions more attractive. Asphalt pavements are widely recognized as being sustainable because they can be recycled easily and effectively, but an even more sustainable practice is to ensure the long life of a pavement in place. Perpetual pavements may be the ultimate in sustainable roadways because they are designed and constructed to perform for 50 years or more with minimal surface renewal, reducing the demand for new materials, user delays and costs. This teleconference will explore the role of perpetual pavement design in ensuring sustainability.
