The movement toward a sustainable built environment is rapidly evolving, significantly impacting the way buildings are planned, designed, constructed and used. Different and potentially competing forces, such as owners’ goals, code requirements, and basic liability considerations, can impact the sustainable objective targeted for a project and the sustainable measures needed to achieve the sustainable objective. It is critical that everyone involved in a sustainable project understand the distinctions between potential objectives, and have a clear process for development and implementation of the project design. In May of 2011, the American Institute of Architects released AIA Document D503™-2011, Guide for Sustainable Projects, in order to assist owners, architects, contractors and other project participants in understanding the various issues associated with sustainable projects and to provide a framework for moving those projects forward. This OnDemand Webinar will help design and construction industry participants, and their advisors, to maximize effective use of this valuable resource. The program will address how the Guide was developed and structured, and will cover key issues to be considered by each party when embarking on a sustainable project. The presenters will describe how model language provided in the Guide might be used to create a framework for handling these issues and achieving successful completion of a sustainable project.

Learning Objectives:
•You will be able to discuss the state of sustainable design and construction.
•You will be able to explain the scope of the architect’s services for sustainable projects.
•You will be able to identify special issues of interest to each party.
•You will be able to review additional information included in Guide.
